An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge – Ambrose Bierce

Download An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge ebook. “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, a short story by American author Ambrose Bierce, is “one of the most famous and frequently anthologized stories in American literature”.[1] Originally published by The San Francisco Examiner on July 13, 1890, it was first collected in Bierce’s 1891 book Tales of Soldiers and Civilians. The story is set during the American Civil War, in which Bierce himself was a soldier.

“An Occurrence” is renowned for its irregular time sequence and twist ending. Bierce’s narrative, discarding linear sequence, and adopting the protagonist’s inner experience, is an early employment of stream of consciousness. Calling it “the greatest American short story”, author Kurt Vonnegut added, “It isn’t remotely political. It is a flawless example of American genius, like ‘Sophisticated Lady’ by Duke Ellington or the Franklin stove.”

Editorial Reviews

*******NO SPOILERS REVIEW******
Middle school, High School, College or Middle age: An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge is an American short classic, ripe for revisiting throughout life’s milestones–or cobblestones.

Without revealing the story, this work is definitely in Bierce’s wheelhouse, as much of his writing is in this specific sub-genre: a type of writing made very popular In the era and aftermath of the death and great loss of the Civil War. This story sees Bierce at his best, especially when describing the minutiae of what he, almost, over-simplifies as just an occurrence. Bierce also experiments with stream of consciousness narration, groundbreaking stuff in 1890. It’s only because we have seen a century built on the works of Bierce, and those like him, that this story may seem quaint or, even, familiar. It was anything but familiar 127 years ago, believe me. Remember context; always remember context. Bierce is a terribly under-celebrated talent and deserves your attention for the next 30 minutes; drink in the Occurrence for the first, third or, even, the eighth time. You’ll be all the better for it. Or, maybe not. But, you will have enjoyed a short story by one of the American greats.
